During her GOP convention speech, Alaska Governor and Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, in a highly successful display of folksy humour, defined the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull with a point to her own mouth, declaring “Lipstick.” In early September, Obama used a proverbial phrase, “lipstick on a pig” to describe McCain’s plans to reform Washington. Immediately Former Massachusetts governor Jane Swift led others in accusing Obama of personally attacking Sarah Palin.
Obama’s remark was quickly determined to not refer to Palin; McCain himself had used the expression recently. The furor, however, spotlighted the raging conflict of attitudes surrounding Palin’s nomination. While Palin has amassed a large group of conservative supporters, attracted by her unabashed self-portrayal as an “average hockey mom”, the backlash from the left, especially from women, has been intense. Gloria Steinem’s September 4 Los Angeles Times Opinion piece and of course Tina Fey’s celebrated parodies embody this sentiment.
If stripped of the politic-speak and hucksterism, how does Palin’s experience stack up against that of her opponent Joe Biden, and past Vice-presidents? Claire Taylor Hansen surveys the numbers with bold black and white diagrams on this powder pink American Apparel shirt, with a comparative chart on the front and opinion piece on the back.
Even if I weren’t Claire Taylor Hansen’s mother, I would think this is the best T shirt I have ever seen. Really!
